- נָהַם(b. h.; v. נְהֵי I) to be agitated; to make a noise. Ber.32a אין ארי נוֹהֵםוכ׳ the lion does not get excited over a heap of straw but over a heap of flesh, i. e. plenty produces haughtiness. Yalk. Jer. 277 (play on בן ה̇נ̇ם̇, Jer. 19:2) שקולו של תינוק נ֗ו֗הֵ֗ם֗וכ׳ for the voice of the child shrieked under the fire; a. fr. Pi. נִיהֵם same, esp. to coo (in love, longing ). Ber.3a מְנַהֶמֶת כיונה cooing (in mourning) like a dove. Pesik. R. s. 21, a. e., v. נְהִימָהMidr. Till. to Ps. 106:9 מְנַהֵם עליהם כנהמת ים (adapted fr. Is. 5:30) he roared over them ; Yalk. Ps. 864 ויִנְהםֹ.
